West L.A. Music recently presented a clinic featuring world renowned drummer Sonny Emory. Former drummer for Earth, Wind and Fire, Emory has also played for such legendary artists as Stanley Clarke, David Sanborn, Bette Midler, Al Jarreau, Paula Abdul, and Joe Sample. Emory demonstrated his unique styling and technique to a crowd of more than 200 musicians, songwriters, producers, engineers, and students in the outdoor ampitheatre of the Felicia Mayhood Center in West Los Angeles.
Emory opened the clinic with a 15 minute rhythmic adventure, showcasing multiple styles and his complete mastery of the drumset. Following the introduction, Emory discussed the layout of his kit, as well as his education and training. He went into gre at detail of his unique double foot pedaling, demonstrating to the audience several exercises and drills to increase skill and foot strength
Emory went on to discuss and demonstrate several techniques to increase wrist control and strength. He demonstrated how control of the wrists and hands can produce increased dynamic control and clarity. He also went into depth about how to incorporate visual effects into your performance. He attributed much of his success in his visual artistry to years of practice and experiences with marching bands.
Emory answered questions from the audience, and then closed the clinic with another incredible solo session. After the clinic , Emory returned to West L.A. Music's drum shop where he signed autographs, posters, and instruments brought by clinic gue sts and fans. Also following the clinic, was a drawing for more than $1000 in prizes and gear sponsored by Yamaha and Zildjian.
